The addition of names to Memorials to the Missing.

Should a case of non-commemoration come to light and once eligibility for commemoration has been confirmed, the casualty's name would normally be added to the appropriate memorial to the Missing, either on the addenda panel, or if space is available, on their parent regiment/unit panel. It is known that on occasion the Commission has erected a special memorial headstone in a cemetery when it is thought highly likely that one of the unnamed burials contained there is that of the casualty in question. Such headstones would bear the inscription, "Believed To Be Buried In This Cemetery".

Each memorial commemorates the Missing from specific sectors and dates of the war. For example, Thiepval Memorial in France remembers soldiers and sailors of British and South African forces who died in the Somme sector from July 1915 up until 20th March 1918. Therefore it is important that commemoration is made in the correct place, determined by referencing the casualty's details with his units war diary, which gives a day by day & sometimes hour by hour account of its movements. A really quite simple task, but one which the Commission has managed to get wrong on at least one occasion; see Richard Ellison below.

Here are a few examples of new commemorations.

Lieutenant Alexander Douglas Anderson. 1/4th Battalion, Gloucestershire Regiment. KIA 17/7/16 at the Battle of the Somme near Ovillers. This Officer's name has been added to the Thiepval Memorial Addenda Panels.

Lieut. Hubert Reginald BALDWIN. RNVR. Nelson Bn., R.N.Div., formerly "B" Company, Benbow Bn. Missing & assumed Killed in action 13/7/15. This Officer's name has been added to the Commission's database & to the Helles Memorial addenda panel in Turkey.

_____________________________________

Second Lieutenant Reginald Russell Boyd. 9th Battalion, Scottish Rifles attd. 7th Battalion, Border Regiment. DOW 4/5/17 in France. This Officer's name has been added to the Commission's database, but has not yet been added to the relevant Memorial addenda panel.

_____________________________________

Second Lieutenant Charles Joseph Byrne. Observer, 206 Squadron, Royal Air Force. Killed in action 25/7/18 over the Western Front. This Officer's name has been added to the Commission's database, but has not yet been added to the relevant Memorial addenda panel.

47577 Pte. Harry Carter, 19th Battalion, Manchester Regt. KIA 31/7/17. Formerly RTS-2392 Pte. 2nd Base Remount Depot, ASC (entitled to the 1914 Star). This Soldier's name has been added to the Commission's database, but has not yet been added to the relevant Memorial addenda panel in France.

Canadian RFC Officer

2nd Lieutenant Walter Gordon COUTTS. 28 Training Squadron, Royal Flying Corps. Killed whilst flying 2/12/17. Early in 2001, we put forward a suspected case of non-commemoration to the Department of Veterans Affairs in Canada, with regard to this Canadian Officer. Very recently we received notification telling us that the Commission has added his name to their register. It was a simple case of us providing his name, along with brief details via e-mail. The Department then completed further investigations on our behalf. Well done Canada !

31905 Pte. Sykes DOBSON, 2/6th Battalion, North Staffs Regt. Died whilst POW between 25/3/18 & 25/6/18. This Soldier's name has been added to the Commission's database, but has not yet been added to the relevant Memorial addenda panel in France.

112518 Spr. Richard ELLISON. 172nd Tunnelling Company, Royal Engineers. KIA 14/2/16 in the Ypres salient. This man was notified to the Commission in the late 1980's. Unfortunately, the Commission have inscribed his name in error on the Arras Memorial to the Missing, when in fact it should have been placed on the Menin Gate Memorial, Ypres, amongst those of his comrades who died on the same day: 112673 Spr. Percy William DIXON & 112863 Spr. Samuel SMITH both 172nd Tunnelling Company, Royal Engineers. The Commission have also omitted "Tunnelling" in the man's unit designation.

Cross marking Grave. The Commission were made aware of this man's uncommemorated status in 2000. This sailor's name has been added to the Commission's database & to the Helles Memorial addenda panel in Turkey.

LZ/1166 AB Burleigh St. Muir HANNAM. RNVR Hawke Bn, RND, KIA 13/11/16, Battle of The Ancre, Beaumont Hamel. Buried in Shell-Holes near German 3rd Line at Map Ref: Q.17.b.94. Born 19/1/1897.
