Private Jack Shaw, of the RMLI, whose home was at 1, Quarry St., Smithies, was reported missing on May 13th of last year, & now official information has been received that he is reported dead. He was 21 years of age & prior to enlisting in Sept. 1914, he worked at Wharncliffe Colliery. The deceased was well known & highly esteemed. He was a regular worshipper at Buckley St. Chapel. ; 14/15 Star, BWM & Vic. issued to Father.

Born 13th April 1895. A Boiler-maker. Son of August and Eleanor (née Metcalfe) Svensson, of 31 Cardonnel Street, North Shields, Northumberland, & resided there on enlistment. On the 20th June 1915 his brother-in-law, Mr. William S. Hedley, of 12 Nile St., South Shields, wrote that “Mr Svensson is at sea at present, and it is considered desirable not to send news direct to Mother as ‘she fears the worst.’ Requests news to be sent to him.” (Listed on Geary’s Roll as Thomas Stevenson).
